Agricultural marketing deals with the demand and supply of agricultural products so that it satisfies the needs of the buyers and brings in profits for the supplier. The agriculture marketing officer is responsible for pricing, selling, market research, advertising, promotion, packaging, transport, placement, planning, and accounting.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Agriculture marketing officers work for agricultural supply companies, farmer cooperatives and farm marketing bodies to market farm produce
- Those responsible for agricultural machinery sell tractors, seeders, ploughs, harvesters, etc. to farmers in a specified region
- Marketing managers plan, develop and implement marketing strategies in order to attract buyers and increase profits
- Those working for an agricultural chemical company have to be in charge of sales staff, and also take care of the distribution and advertising for the company within a state or the entire country
- Some are also in charge of marketing produce from member farms
- They must build and develop a list of clients and customers who would stick to them even a fluctuating market
Skills and Specifications
- Communication skills, along with application of those skills with various marketing strategies are required
- Leadership skills and being a team player is also important
- An agricultural manager must be persuasive and be ready to do a lot of legwork
- Critical thinking, identifying the target customer and understanding their needs are important
- He must be good with numbers and must be able to make quick calculations
- He should be organized and maintain proper records of sales, profits and losses
Education and Qualifications
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in management and commerce with specialization in agriculture sciences are good options if one is interested in this line. There are more courses available on applied management, farm management, agricultural marketing etc. For senior level jobs, prior experience and diversification of skills is necessary.
