An automotive engineer develops new designs for automotive parts like engines, batteries, transmissions, and other automotive equipment. He may also modify existing equipment and supervises how to build and test the new vehicle with the improved features.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts experiments and tests on existing designs to obtain data on function and performance of the machine
  • He analyzes data to develop new designs for different parts of a vehicle like motors, chassis, and other related mechanical, hydraulic, components and systems
  • He designs components and systems to provide maximum customer value and also vehicle function
  • He should make sure the developments give improved economy and safety of operation
  • Emission control is a very important concern nowadays and at the same time he should ensure operational performance at optimum costs
  • He directs and coordinates development and modification of the automotive equipment to conform it with the engineering design
  • He has to direct testing activities on the components and equipment under specific conditions to ensure operational performance
  • Based on the test results, he alters or modifies the design to obtain the required functional and operational performance
  • He conducts research to develop new concepts in this field

Skills and Specifications

  • An automotive engineer must be technically creative and should be able to visualise what change he wants to bring in a vehicle
  • He should be able to research well and ensure the customer gets the optimum value for money
  • He should have good analytical skills and must be good at math
  • He must be knowledgeable about computers and know the latest applications for testing and simulations

Education and Qualifications

In order to become an automotive engineer, one can go for a degree in automotive engineering provided by many private and public institutes. In college-level, one can choose courses like physics, math, statistics, chemistry etc.
