Automotive Paint Technician Job Profile and Description

The Automotive Paint Technician is responsible for the proper application of body paints – one of the last major aesthetic and functional processes in the assembly of automobiles.  They operate painting machines and tools and use the specified paint mixes in according with automotive engineering specifications, painting procedures and standards.

Automotive Paint Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • De-grease, remove dirt, old paint or rust from vehicle surfaces in preparation for paint application.
  • Mix paint pigments to match color specifications or vehicles’ original colors.
  • Implement the paint mixes as specified by the automotive paint engineers
  • Pour paint into spray guns and adjust nozzles and paint mixes for proper paint flow and coating thickness.
  • Operate automated body paint systems for various types of vehicles destined for export to different countries.
  • Ensure no mix-up in the shipment of cars meant for warm humid countries and those meant for colder temperate countries.
  • Assist the industrial engineers in ensuring that the painting processes adopted are performed in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.
  • Assist in the development of new paint solutions.
  • Monitor painting operations to identify flaws, such as blisters and streaks, and correct their causes.
  • Wear protective apparel and face masks against spray fumes.

 

Automotive Paint Technician Skills and Specifications

  • Must have computer literacy to operate robotic paint machines and other computerized machines and software used in the painting process
  • Must have comprehension skills to understand and apply engineering blueprints and bulletins

Automotive Paint Technician Education and Qualifications

  • While a high school diploma would suffice for the position are taking a bias over candidate with an Associate degree in Industrial Technology.
  • Must not be color blind
  • An experience in the same field I another company is an advantage

The median wage for an Automotive Paint Technician in 2009 stood at $18.38 hourly or $38,230 annualized.  The range of salary hinges on the nature of the business with the lowest coming from independent car repair shops and the highest from car assembly plants.
