Customer service is an important requirement in every organisation’s profile nowadays, and a bank is no different. In banking, customer service involves assisting customers in any banking and finance-related activities and helping them in their account management needs. Bank customer service executives may be present in the bank or help the customer through the telephone or in virtual banking environments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Bank customer service executives interact with customers and give provide information enquiries about products or services
  • They understand the customer’s problems and also resolve complaints
  • They may need to communicate with customers through various ways, in person, by telephone, e-mail or regular mail, or fax and nowadays or even over the Internet
  • Customer service representatives usually handle general questions and complaints, but some may have to specialize in a particular area and deal with specific problems
  • Some of them help a customer decide what product or service would be suitable for their needs
  • They need to make regular changes or updates to a customer’s profile or account information
  • They also have to keep records of transactions and maintain a database of information

Skills and Specifications

  • Bank customer service executives must have thorough knowledge of the various services, possible problems and the different processes and solutions
  • They must have good communication skills and must be polite and understanding towards the customer’s queries
  • They must be able to work under pressure, as in many cases they may have to deal with irate customers and should be patient in such cases
  • They should be organised and take the concept of client confidentiality very seriously

Education and Qualifications

In most banks, a high school degree is required for customer service positions such as tellers. But for senior positions like managers, a bachelor’s degree in the field of finance and management is the industry standard.
