Barber Job Profile and Description

Barber job duties include providing customers with hair maintenance services including shaping, cutting, trimming, and tapping hair, using combs, clippers, scissors and blow-out gun, Barbers often work on men’s hair, although most barbers have both female and male customers. Barbers and hairstylists do their work in beauty salons or barbershops. However, some work in spas, hotels, resorts, government agencies or department stores.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applying lather, shaving beard and hair contour (outline) on the neck and temple using a razor
  • Performing other tonsorial services, like applying lotions or hairdressings, dyeing, singeing, shampooing or styling hair
  • Massaging neck, face or scalp
  • Recording service charge on ticket or specific books and receiving payment for services
  • Some barbers and hair stylists sell tonics, lotions and other cosmetic supplies
  • Styling and coloring hair using equipment such as curling, rollers, color treatments and straightening irons
  • Performing various hair related processes such as frosting, highlighting or streaking hair
  • Some barbers and hairstylists style, shampoo and fit wigs and hairpieces.
  • Selling wigs and hairpieces
  • Keeping the barbershop area clean and ensuring that the working tools are sterile and always in good working condition.
  • Using gel, lotion and powder to groom customers
  • Taking care of the day-to-day activities involved in running a small business
  • Ordering and receiving supplies
  • Keeping inventories of shop equipment and supplies
  • Making customer appointments
  • Paying bills and ensuring smooth running of the business

Skills and Specifications

  • A barber must be clean and attractive
  • Ability to work well and fast with their hands
  • Barbers spend most of their time standing, so physical fitness is a necessity
  • Good humor and patience
  • Cheerful
  • Good organizational and communication skills

Education and Qualifications

  • Minimum high school education
  • A course in hair styling, cosmetology and dressing is an advantage
