A bridge engineer is a civil engineer or a structural engineer who specializes in the design of bridges. The job is a multilayered and complicated one. A bridge engineer works as a part of a team and collaborates his work with other member of the team.
Bridge engineer duties and responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of a bridge engineer are:
- Surveying the site of construction and assessing suitability
- Estimating traffic load on the bridge
- Designing various bridge components in keeping with expected traffic and soil strength
- Preparing blueprints of the design
- Creating the most functional and cost effective design
- Preparing detailed estimation of the entire bridge project or a part of the bridge assigned to him or her
- Communicating with contractors with regard to undertaking construction work
- Adhering to the orders of chief engineer
- Ensuring safety standards of the bridge
- Ensuring that the design is strong and durable
- Ensuring that the design, including materials used and structural elements are as per government standards
- Generating three-dimensional computer models to test the efficiency and appearance of the bridge more thoroughly
- May have to prepare construction schedule depending on his or her position in the project
- Must visit construction site and may have to shift place of residence during construction phase

- Excellent knowledge about basic and advanced concepts of civil engineering
- Thorough knowledge regarding safety standards
- Good analysis skills
- Good observation skills
- Ability to work outdoors for long hours
- Excellent computer knowledge, especially software that aid in structural design and drawing
Bridge engineer education and qualification
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is mandatory for the job. Master’s degree in structural engineer is extremely helpful. Work experience of 1-2 years in any structural field is also very helpful although not mandatory.
