Captains act as the final authorities aboard moving vessels be it small boats or big ships.  The vessel could be a giant long distance container ship or charter fishing boat. Irrespective of the vessel’s size, a captain’s role is to ensure that the clients using the vessel’s services are accorded good care.  In addition to this, captains have the responsibility to ensure that vessels are well maintained between one point and another. Not only does a captain have to keep clients safe, but he or she must ensure that clients’ cargo is transported safely.

Duties and Responsibilities

Captain job duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintaining the vessel and having it repaired whenever it develops a problem. The areas that need maintenance include cabins, tackle, safety jackets and others.
  • Checking to ensure that the vessel meets the recommended safety regulations and emergency measures.
  • Training and assessing staff on the protocols and procedures for working with various clients.
  • Drawing business plans, preparing budgets and evaluating the most cost-effective practices for vessel maintenance.
  • Networking, marketing and advertising in order to expand the client base for sea travel.
  • Collaborating with other businesses within the community in order to advertise intensely.
  • Taking charter passengers to their appropriate destinations and ensuring that they are returned safely.
  • Being familiar with various navigational areas in order to take clients to diverse places.

Skills and Specifications

Captain job skills and specifications include but are not limited to the following:

  • Good familiarity with the area of operation.
  • Ability to work for long hours.
  • Possession of a valid navigation license
  • Possession of a certified sailing permit.

Education and Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in any nautical course and a series of relevant training certificates
