A Cashier is an essential position in any retail or departmental store as they are in charge of smoothly conducting all financial transaction related to the store sales. This position requires experience and swiftness in handling all operations. An individual of this profile needs to typically report and carry out all functions as delegated by the supervising authority or store manager. A cashier also requires undergoing training for carrying necessary functions of the establishment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keeping record of the daily opening and closing balance of the store.
  • Ensuring proper maintenance of the cash registers.
  • Reporting discrepancies to the supervising authority of the store.
  • Accurately calculating and handing change to customers.
  • Check the labels and tags of all customer purchases and make the bills in accordance with the same.
  • Making transaction entries into the computer for maintaining records.
  • Following all company billing and registration processes correctly.
  • Completing all tasks assigned by the manager or supervisor.

Skills and Specifications

  • Should possess good written and verbal communication skills for interacting with customers.
  • Should have excellent arithmetic skills and the ability to calculate efficiently.
  • Should possess the knowledge of maintaining accounts, ledger balances and cash registers.
  • Should be compliant with the procedures for recording credit and debit card transactions.

Education and Qualifications

  • High school degree, GED certification, or an equivalent educational qualification from a certified college.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, bookkeeping, accounts or any other related discipline with about 2 – 3 years experience in a cash handling or accounts in a retail store.
