Trained as chemical engineers, Ceramics Engineers specialize in the application of engineering disciplines in the formulation and development of ceramic materials for commercial and industrial use along with the manufacturing facilities, methods and ancillary safety, quality assurance and waste management processes. They can be found working in companies manufacturing construction ceramic tiles for floors and walls or ceramics for dental prosthetics, kitchen and dinner wares as well as in electronic applications such as ceramic heads in audio recording.
Ceramics Engineer Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the manufacturing technologies or their enhancements for improved quality, productivity and cost-effective ceramic mass production.
- Evaluate quality assurance statistical results to identify in-process problem points and develop engineering solutions where applicable
- Develop printing processes on ceramics that are last longer and retain colors longer after frequent use or abuse.
- Collaborate with design staff to ensure that new ceramic formulations can adopt to contemplated designs in form, texture and colors.
- Develop and implement manufacturing process improvements
- Conduct stress testing of newly formulated ceramic products and document test results with the purpose of engineering further enhancements.
- Keep abreast with emerging ceramic engineering technologies.
Ceramics Engineer Skills and Specifications

Ceramics Engineer Education and Qualifications
- A BS in chemical engineering and the board exam is basic
- 1-3 years of experience as an engineer in a related industry applied for is an advantage.
