A clinical nurse focuses his attention on patients with specific illnesses. They specialise in different types of diseases or conditions like cardiovascular disease or diabetes, or are in charge of the neonatal unit of a health care facility.
Duties and Responsibilities
- A clinical nurse takes down the vital signs of the patient and checks for any irregularities in his condition
- He maintains and processes patient records and updates the physician in case there is negative symptoms
- He helps the patient to get ready for tests and other examinations
- If he is at a senior position, he is directly involved in making the budget for the medical unit
- He has to oversee medical records, evaluate performance of the employees and is responsible for staff recruitment, retention and quality improvement
- He consults with other health care professionals to decide on the ideal management of patient care
- He hires new nurses and assigns the nurse to the appropriate health care unit
- Some clinical nurses also perform research to remain aware of the latest nursing care practices
- They participate in assessment activities to determine the individual requirements of the patients and overall program needs for the health care facility
- Some of them are also responsible for conducting and training for staff
Skills and Specifications
- A clinical nurse must have very good interpersonal and communication skills
- He should be organised and have team-building skills
- He should be sympathetic to the patient and also his caregivers
- He must be able to work in high-pressure situations
- He should also have good management skills and must be punctual
Education and Qualifications
A clinical nurse must have bachelors or master’s degree in nursing or other health-related field. He should have knowledge of the basic computer skills for administrative purposes.
