The operational heads or chairpersons of a college specializing in a particular study like medicine, arts & sciences, fine arts, engineering or law are designated or called College Deans. Apart from engaging in the same teaching activities, college deans develop the curriculum in line with or above the course standards to distinguish the college or university or college above others. They also coordinate with fellow professors in each course to collegially arrive at the schedules of classes, propose new courses and budgets to the University President. College Deans are also assigned to head specific University functions such as getting the position as Dean of Student Affairs, etc.
College Dean Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the development of class schedules and teaching assignments among faculty departments heads in time of the incoming semester
- Propose operating and capital budgets for approval by the university president.
- Conduct the final screening of applicants for any of the teaching positions in the college.
- Appoint professorial chairs to the qualified professors.
- Evaluate faculty heads and teaching staff
- Open opportunities that encourage faculty staff training, career development and advancement.
- Chair committees as may be appointed by the University president.
- Oversee and strike a healthy balance among administrators, faculty staff and student welfare.
College Dean Skills and Specifications
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and diplomatic skills
- Must have strong academic background with a portfolio of published works
- Must have excellent organizational, leadership and managerial skills
College Dean Education and Qualifications
- A doctoral degree is basic, indicating a superior academic background among fellow professors in the college.
- 5-8 years of experience as a faculty head in the college is preferred.
