Construction Estimator Job Profile and Description
The job of a construction estimator is to provide cost estimates for the construction of commercial, residential, and municipality buildings. He uses his own experience and construction plans to analyze the spending statistic and project budget. The estimation will include all the necessary materials required in the construction process; cement, bricks, rods, pipes, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To work with quantity surveyor and estimate the amount and type of material required to deliver the contracted specifications.
- To estimate the cost of equipment and plant.
- To work with planning engineers and site managers and help predict the duration of the project and the cost involved.
- To establish the estimated completion rate and progress, this will include the necessary reimbursements for bad weather conditions and other unpredictable events.
- To calculate a final figure of the cost that will have to be incurred.
- To present a necessary tender price.
- To work on CAD applications for determining the final project statistics.
- To provide with suitable plans when budget is a prior set constraint.
- To read and understand blueprints and discuss them with the site manager and the client.
Skills and Specifications
- He must have strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- He should have a good eye for details.
- He should be comfortable with understanding blueprints.
- He must be having good communication and interpersonal qualities.
- He must be able to work as a team and foster confidence in all.
- He should be comfortable in basic computer applications and CAD applications.
- He should be comfortable in handling large files with confidential data.
- He should have the knowledge of basic construction software’s.
Education and Qualifications
A construction estimator is preferably a student of engineering, architecture and construction management. A degree form a recognized university is a primary criterion. Experience is helpful.
