Cruise Director Job Profile and Description
Essentially, a cruise director serves as the master planner for all types of shipboard activities and entertainment in a cruise ship. Besides ensuring that all cultural and social events are properly coordinated, the cruise director also usually acts as the primary source of information for passengers and guests on the cruise, making sure that they are having an enjoyable and trouble free experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Cruise director job duties and responsibilities include:
- Directing passenger services, from public announcements to activity programs as well as onboard welcome and disembarking information
- Serving as a conduit to passengers with problems, either finding a means to fix them or referring them on to the appropriate ship departments
- Keeping staff informed of appropriate conduct and behavior among passengers and their fellow crew
- Managing and overseeing the performance and conduct of the relevant departments as well as those of other staff
- Organizing schedules for a staff of speakers, lecturers, on-staff entertainers and special guests performers for regular onboard programs
- Attending private parties such as the Cruise Critic onboard gatherings, VIP functions, and ship-organized events, including welcome aboard receptions and past passenger parties
- Organizing reports and information for corporate headquarter or ship needs
- Keeping log records of major events in the cruise

Education and Qualifications
- Knowledge of ships’ security measures and safety procedures as issued by ISM (International Safety Management)
