An employment interviewer is like a middleman between a company that is looking for candidates and applicants who are looking for a job. They spend most their time interviewing these applicants and talking to the employers over the phone and when they find the right man for the job, they arrange for an interview. Employment interviewers thus help job seekers find suitable job openings and employers find a qualified employee. They work for both private employment agencies and government employment services. Sometimes, job seekers come to agencies on their own or in response to ads that agencies puts in different media. On other times, employers come to the employment interview and give specifications about what they want.

The duties and responsibilities of an employment interviewer will involve:

  • Asking job seekers to fill out application forms with information about education, job experience, references
  • Updating the computer database by entering these applications or by putting it in paper files
  • Interviewing the applicants to find out their interests and abilities
  • Matching the applicants’ preferences with the jobs that are in the database
  • Contacting companies to find jobs for their clients
  • Sending applicants for interviews with companies that want workers
  • Giving advice to the applicant about the job duties, preparing a resume or how to handle himself during the interview
  • Cross-checking applicants’ references

The skills and specifications that are required of an employment interviewer include:

  • Good communication skills and perceptive nature is helpful while interacting with companies and applicants
  • Interpersonal and people skills must be good and they must enjoy working with people
  • Ability to work under pressure and sometimes extra hours

Employment Interviewer Education and Qualification

The education and qualification requirements for an employment interviewer are as follows:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology, guidance, vocational counselling, or business administration is appreciated
  • Work experience in these areas are also helpful
  • Basic knowledge of computer, good typing skills, data entry etc is necessary
  • Licensing may be required for some states
  • Training is usually provided by the firm

An employment interviewer can expect to get around $42,000 per year on an average and almost all of them earn commissions for every hiring. Starting salaries are lesser but as they reach a senior position or help to recruit people for higher posts in good companies, their commission per hiring goes up.
