In a large company that employs a staff of engineers, there’s an engineering management position which can be a manager, director or even a VP, depending on the nature and scope of the function. Larger groups with highly evolved engineering functions are often headed by an Engineering Director who has both the technical competence as well as the managerial skills to supervise a team of engineers and manage the corporate resources used in any engineering work.
Engineering Director/Manager Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct and manage multiple concurrent engineering projects while ensuring their success in meeting their respective objectives.
- Implement approved engineering budgets and monitor actual expenses to ensure they fall within budgets, analyzing out of budget expenses and ensuring they are offset in other areas of the project unless fully justified.
- Consult or negotiate with clients to finalize engineering project specifications.
- Negotiate with 3rd party engineering suppliers to get the best business deals..
- Present engineering plans, progress status updates and situationers to project stakeholders and financiers.
- Review and approve proposed engineering designs and subsequent product and process enhancements or changes.
- Perform administrative and oversight functions in approving proposals, expenditures, enforcing policies and hiring and firing of engineers

- Must have excellent organization, supervisory, managerial and leadership skills to manage a team of engineers and technical staff.
- Must have proven multitasking skills and can work under extreme pressure.
- Must have excellent analytical and computational skills
- Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Engineering Director/Manager Education and Qualifications
- A masters degree in the pertinent engineering course is basic
- 5-8 years of experience in the pertinent engineering field is an advantage.
