Equal Opportunities Officer Job Profile and Description

The equal opportunities officer has to monitor and evaluate whether a company is following laws related to equal opportunity — guidelines and policies that ensure that the company is following healthy employment practices and giving equal opportunities to its candidates with no bias to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or disability.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The equal opportunities officer has to conduct in-house surveys and evaluate the results in order to determine if systematic discrimination exists in the office
  • He has to counsel new employees who belong to minority and disadvantaged groups and give them information about their civil rights and the company policy
  • He has to simply interpret fundamental rights laws and equal opportunity regulations for both employees and employers
  • He has to inspect and investigate employment practices and find out I there have been any alleged violations of laws
  • He must document these cases and correct discriminatory factors
  • He has to meet the persons involved in equal opportunity complaints in order to verify the complaints and settle disputes
  • He has to prepare reports, statistics and recommendations for corrective action
  • He reviews company contracts to determine what actions are required to meet governmental equal opportunity measures

Skills and Specifications

  • He must be sensitive to person’s culture and sensibilities
  • He should be impartial and objectively investigate any cases of unequal opportunities
  • He should have good communications skills and provide support and advice to employees
  • He should maintain employee confidentiality and use his discretion when interacting with people involved in such cases

Education and Qualifications

In order to be an equal opportunities officer one needs to do a course on human resources or an MBA. One can also have a general arts back ground with subjects like economics, political science etc.
