Food Preparation Job Profile and Description

A food preparation worker is employed by eating joints or private caterers and performs a variety of food preparation duties besides cooking, such as preparing cold foods and shellfish, slicing meat, and brewing coffee or tea. They are also responsible for cleaning work areas, equipment, utensils etc

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A food preparation worker store food in specific containers and storage areas in order to prevent spoilage
  • He has to prepare a variety of dishes according to client’s orders or supervisors’ instructions and also follow approved procedures
  • He has to pack take-away foods also serve food to customers
  • He places food trays over food warmers for immediate service during buffets, or store them in refrigerators
  • He has to check supplies and inform his supervisors when supplies are getting less or any equipment is not working.
  • He has to weigh or measure ingredients for the dishes
  • He must assist cooks and kitchen staff with various tasks as required, and provide cooks with needed items
  • He stock cupboards and refrigerators, and looks over salad bars and buffet meals
  • After the cooking is over, he is responsible for removing the trash, scraping leftovers from dishes into garbage containers and cleaning them
  • He can also make special dressings and sauces for sandwiches or dishes like pastas etc
  • He can also use manual and or electric appliances to clean, peel, slice, and trim foods

Skills and Specifications

  • He should have knowledge of principles of customer and personal services and thus should have good communication skills
  • He must know techniques and how to operate equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food

Education and Qualifications

A food preparation worker usually needs only a bachelor’s degree, but some of them also attend culinary school or have a hotel management degree.
