Forklift operator Job Profile and Description

A forklift truck is a kind of vehicle which helps a person performs tasks associated with moving goods from one place to another. It is a lot more than just riding around a forklift, as the operator needs to be extremely careful not to damage the goods position them accurately. Forklift operators can work at airports, loading docks, warehouses and in heavy industry settings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • A forklift operator needs to load or unload trucks or be asked to supply production areas with product or remove finished goods to a warehouse storage area
  • At times he is also responsible for inspecting the lifts before usage
  • He may also have to participate in training sessions
  • He can work as a crane operator, bulldozer operator or a heavy machinery driver
  • A forklift operator has to check inventory, do product counts or weigh and tag the product
  • He also has to use a handheld bar code scanner, inspect and maintain equipment
  • He may also have to wrap loads with a shrink wrapper and load goods on and off a truck
  • Sometimes he may also he asked to check the equipment and clean the warehouse
  • Operators at times also need to do data entry and bill of ladings for goods going out

Skills and Specifications:

  • A forklift operator should have a proper license to be able to operate the vehicle
  • He must know the technical functions of the different parts or types of forklift like wheel loader, basket lift, pallet jackets etc
  • He must be physically fit and robust

Education and Qualifications:

Usually a high school degree is enough for being a forklift operator. Experience counts more here. A license is provided after training which must be renewed after a point of time.
