A hydroelectric power plant makes use of dams or waterfalls as the motive force in operating electric generating equipment.  It involves a team of plant operators under the Hydroelectric Production Manager who is responsible for managing the resources dedicated to the operation of power generating facilities. The main objective is to ensure that the rated power output of the plant is achieved and sustained with the least downtimes or operational problems and in accordance with the plant’s operating standards as well as state’s safety regulations

Hydroelectric Production Manager Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the operations and maintenance, of hydroelectric power facilities.
  • Supervise the people in charge of handling the various sections in the plant.
  • Monitor hydroelectric facility operations to ensure that generation conform to applicable operational and safety regulations or standards.
  • Ensure that hydroelectric operations comply with prescribed operating standards, load and voltage/current limits, temperatures, etc.
  • Enforce hydrostation voltage schedules.
  • Develop, review and implement operating budgets, annual plans, power contracts, power rates, standing operating procedures, or engineering studies
  • Communicate power system emergencies in accordance with approved problem escalation procedures.
  • Maintain records of hydroelectric facility operations, maintenance, or repairs.
  • Inspect hydroelectric equipment such as generators, hydro-turbines, and control systems to ensure their topmost conditions.
  • Negotiate power generation interconnection contracts with other private utilities.

Hydroelectric Production Manager Skills and Specifications

  • Must have highly developed observation skills to anticipate and detect operational anomalies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a team, as well as verbal and written communication skills in English.

Hydroelectric Production Manager Education and Qualifications

  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in the sciences preferably electrical and chemical sciences is preferred.
  • 2-3 years experience in related work in an advantage.
