Infection Control Job Profile and Description
An Infection Control practitioner’s job necessitates planning, developing, directing, implementing and evaluating infection prevention and control activities within a hospital or heath care centre. Most infection control practitioners report to the Director of Nursing. As a member of the committee of hospital infection control and control team of infection, an infection control practitioner supervises the infection control services for patients, visitors and staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducting regular rounds in hospital departments for discussing, monitoring and following the practices of infection control with staff people.
- Collecting data on infections from hospital departments and maintaining records for every case.
- Conducting training sessions to ensure constant implementation of infection control practices.
- Conducting continuous surveillance for detecting the infection source for the purpose of prevention.
- Following and investigating the incidents of hospital infections, generating reports and reporting them to Director of Nursing.
- Ensuring the availability of supplies and place needed for isolation.
- Implementing educational programs for the provision of skills and knowledge regarding infection preventive measures and control practices to ensure a safe environment or surroundings to patients, visitors and staff.
- Monitoring the execution of preventive measures and providing guidance to staff.
- Participating in unit meetings, in-service education programs, and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
- Participating in infection control team meetings and assisting in their organization.
- Reporting infection outbreaks directly to the Director of Nursing.
- Preparing monthly statistical information for presentations in infection control meetings.
- Reporting any interference for the implementation of infection control practices.
- Making ensure that the staff is free from any infectious disease.
- Initiating emergency, fire safety measures, and safety practices as necessary.

Education and Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized nursing school.
- Diploma in Infection Control field.
- Diploma in Nursing.
