The job of a Journeyman Electrician in any sort of commercial or residential settings entails repairing, maintaining, designing and installing different kinds of electrical systems. In addition, this professional determines type and cost of materials required for the projects, ensures specifications and drawings are accurate, reviewing projects and plans, determining layouts and testing electrical patterns.

They are also responsible to retrofit equipment with controls needed to improve the efficiency and performance of the devices. Journeyman electricians are often self-employed or may work for business, engineering, telecommunications or other companies.

Journeyman Electrician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reading blue prints, running conduit, wiring devices, troubleshooting, and performing quality control testing.
  • Reading and interpreting mechanical, architectural and electrical drawings and code specifications for determining wiring layouts.
  • Troubleshooting, testing and repairing emergency generators and various electrical systems and power distribution systems to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Performing upgrades or preventive maintenance to electrical control systems or remodeling projects at residential homes.
  • Running tests, isolating problems, replacing damaged section of wiring, laying conduit, and performing other tasks as required.
  • Supervising apprentices, performing ordering and inventory of basic supplies, and managing other electricians.
  • Training general electricians and working on various projects without superior’s supervision.
  • Keeping abreast of new technology, electrical services, and manufacturing processes.
  • Performing physically demanding tasks like moving or lifting heavy objects, digging trenches for laying conduit.

Journeyman Electrician Education, Training and Qualifications

A candidate should have a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a certified college. An individual can enroll in associate degree or apprenticeship programs, which offer basic electrical training, analyses, critical thinking, and business skills.

Journeyman Electrician Degrees, Courses & Certification

Candidates are required to take some advanced courses that deal with basic electric controls, electrical code and wiring. In addition to this, they need to gain some experience working as an apprentice under a master electrician to achieve their journeyman electrician license.
