A landscape architect confers with clients, architects and engineers and plans the development of land areas for different projects. These projects may be parks, recreational facilities, airports, offices, highways, hospitals, schools, commercial, industrial, and residential sites. Builders and big companies use landscape architects to beautify the surroundings of these establishments.
Duties and Responsibilities
- A landscape architect arranges and analyzes various data on the site conditions like location, soil, vegetation, drainage
- Based on these data, he studies the location of structures for preparing the environmental impact report
- After that he as to make the site plans, prepare drawings and cost estimates for land development
- He shows contours, vegetation, locations of structures, and other facilities like roads, walks, subway, parking areas, fences, walls, and utilities etc
- He is also responsible for inspection of the construction work in progress in order to ensure that rules are followed
- He must also approve the quality of materials used and has to advise clients and construction workers on the landscape features
Skills and Specifications
- A landscape architecture needs to have good math skills in order to make elaborate calculations for the designs
- Good communication skills are important so that the architect can convey to the workers what exactly wants to be done
- They must be in good physical condition as it is an outdoor job and involves a lot of legwork
- They must have good analytical skills as there is lot of paperwork
- He must have a good imagination and creativity in order to visualise the landscape
Education and Qualifications
Colleges and universities offer degrees on landscape architecture. One can go for courses in surveying, plant ecology, landscape construction, structural design, and city planning. At the school level, one may take courses like biology, history, mathematics, and mechanical drawing.
