Linguistic Anthropologists are anthropologists who specialize in the research and study about the origin, evolution and interrelationships of languages and their roles in driving the emergence of cultures and civilizations peculiar to any of these languages.  This is one of the major branches that anthropologists specialize in, with the other three being sociocultural, biological and physical anthropology.

Linguistic Anthropologist Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct and conduct research studies applying scientific methodologies to thoroughly gather information and data about origins and evolution of languages in various cultures and civilization throughout human history.
  • Document research findings on the demographic, economic, social, political, and religious significance of language development.
  • Present or publish research findings in relevant journals and conduct lectures to interested parties in the academe, government, individuals, scientific organization and the general public as suitable.
  • Assist the government, philanthropic  and civic organization as well as historical foundations in the preservation of the dialects of cultural minorities.

  • Must have keen analytical mind and highly observant
  • Must have strong organization skills to managing a diverse wealth of research data.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have sufficient social and interpersonal skills to head a team of researchers in the field.

Linguistic Anthropologist Education and Qualifications

  • A master’s degree or PhD in anthropology with a major in linguistics is basic
  • 8-10 years experience in the field is an advantage
