Just like civil engineers and architects,  Marine Engineers and naval architects collaborate in the  design, construction, and maintenance of sea crafts, submarines, ships, cruise lines, tankers, naval crafts and other ocean going vessels.. The Marine Engineer designs and supervise the construction of the hardware systems that power and propel, make livable and navigable all water-borne crafts, from sailboats to tankers, from submarines to aircraft carriers.

Marine Engineer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the ship’s propulsion, navigation, steering, and other systems.
  • Prepare or supervise the creation of marine product and system layouts, from a macro and mini perspective in detailing and schematic presentation using CAD/CAM illustrating and rendering systems.
  • Conduct research studies on shipbuilding processes to ensure cost effectiveness and high quality output, worker safer and environmental compliance.
  • Design, develop and supervise the testing, installation, and repair of ship deck apparatus and systems.
  • Coordinate with regulatory bodies to ensure repairs and alterations are in compliance with state regulations
  • Conduct stress testing of marine equipment for operational and environmental integrity.
  • Mentor and supervise marine technicians in implementing engineering designs
  • Develop regular shipbuilding reporting system for stakeholders.
  • Attend local and overseas seminars and conferences about new and high technology shipbuilding processes and trends.

Marine Engineer Skills and Specifications

Marine Engineer Education and Qualifications

  • A BS in Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and passing the board exam is basic
  • 1-3 years of experience as an engineer in a related industry applied for is an advantage.
