Medical Assistant Job Profile and Description:
Medical assistants work in hospitals and medical clinics and handle basic clinical tasks and perform administrative duties, thereby being of help to doctors and ensuring operations run smoothly and efficiently. They may have to handle front desk operations and interact with patients at the doctor’s chamber.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Medical assistants may need to perform different administrative and clinical duties under the direction of doctor
- They may have to schedule appointments, keep medical records, do the billing, and coding for insurance purposes
- He has to take down vital signs and medical history of the patients, prepare them for examination or tests, draw blood or other samples, and give medicines as directed by physician
- Some medical assistants may also have to do laboratory work or deal with only patients
- Some of them are responsible for medical records, bookkeeping, and answering calls for appointments etc
- They may assist the doctors in examining and treating patients
- They also answer patients’ queries about medicines and treatment
- They must maintain records of purchased equipment and other medical supplies
- They must initiate and maintain correspondence with patients and insurance companies
- They may have to explain hospital admission procedures to the visitors
Skills and Specifications
- Medical assistants must have good communication skills and must be caring towards patients
- They should be willing to work under pressure
- They must be understanding and answer all questions of the patients as simply as possible
- They must use discretion while maintaining patient confidentiality
- They must be in a good health and have a positive personality
Education and Qualifications
One needs to have at least a high school degree, preferably a bachelors degree for this job. A diploma or degree in applied sciences will also prove to be beneficial. One must have training in all important administrative and clinical procedures.
