For large and frequently visited museums, a Museum Education Officer is often employed to undertake initiatives in developing and administering educational programs to inform visiting tourist groups and school classes or the general public about the museum’s collection. They also form part of any mobile museum exhibitions to local and overseas points as well as conduct lectures or seminars on new artifact collections of the museum. Museum Education Officers are trained as teachers, combining previous teaching experience with knowledge on the museum’s collection.
Museum Education Officer Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate with school and tour agencies to get schedules of museum visit to prepare materials for the education tour of the museum
- Develop instructional, information or promotional materials about the museum’s collection in print and online.
- Assist the museum curator and archivist in developing the museum’s cataloguing of artifacts and the development of informational write-up on each item for archiving in the computer database.
- Provide brief introduction on the do’s and don’t while on tour inside museum premises for safety of both visitors and museum’s collection.
Museum Education Officer Skills and Specifications
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must have excellent interpersonal and people management skills
- Must have computer literacy skills to handle museum’s database and work with word processing and spreadsheets.
- Must have high organization skills
Museum Education Officer Education and Qualifications
- A college degree in history or the social sciences or a secondary teaching experience in history is basic.
- 2-3 years of experience in a similar museum education is an advantage.
