Pharmacologists are medical scientists who research on human diseases and conditions with the goal of formulating medication in improving human health. Most pharmacologists conduct biomedical R&D to advance the preservation and prolongation of human biological functions. They work with microbiologists in studying viruses, fungi, bacteria, and other infectious microbes in advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of many diseases. They are at the heart of medical research to build the basis for new vaccines, drugs, and treatment procedures.
Pharmacologist Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts clinical pharmacology studies and report for clinical and regulatory submissions.
- Ensure adherence to safety, scientific and regulatory standards.
- Conduct research and experiments to ascertain natural and synthetic ingredients in formulating pharmacological consumer products
- Enhance therapeutic value of existing drugs
- Write reports on experiments and publish articles in scientific journals
Pharmacologist Skills and Specifications
- Must have analytical mind and keen observation to arrive at insightful conclusions in research studies.
- Must have excellent verbal communication, interpersonal and people management skills
- Must have excellent writing skills to document research process and results.
- Must have ability to articulate and discuss complex technical information clearly to an interested audience.
- Must have thorough working knowledge of pharmacokinetic programs and regulatory requirements for US and EC are required.
- Must have computer literacy to work on analytical and modeling computer software (WinNonlin, SAS, etc.)
Pharmacologist Education and Qualifications
- A PhD in any of the biological sciences is basic.
- Alternatively, a medical degree with sufficient training as a doctor but without state license to practice to directly treat people is basic to quality for research or teaching profession.
