Once the electric power has been generated, these are stored and delivered to downline substations whose distribution systems control a network that enable consumers in households, commercial and industrial establishments to get their electric power. The distribution and transmission of power is handled by Power Distributors and Dispatchers who are trained to implement cost effective distribution of electricity. They are also known as Load Dispatchers or Systems Operators.
Power Distributor and Dispatcher Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor console gauges and indicators to control and maintain generation and flow of specified electrical power output through transmission faculties to substations that feet consumers.
- Implement load balancing methods to ensure plant and substations do not suffer any overload condition.
- Coordinate with engineers, field personnel or utility workers to provide information such as clearances, switching orders, or distribution process changes as well as in regulating line voltages and transmission loads
- Respond to emergencies like transmission line failures and activate alternate current route around affected areas.
- Distribute the flow of power between generating stations, substations, distribution lines, or users, monitoring circuit status and connections.
- Monitor switchboard or console readings to ensure that electrical distribution equipment is operating properly.
Power Distributor and Dispatcher Skills and Specifications
- Must have highly developed observation skills to anticipate and detect operational anomalies
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a team, as well as verbal and written communication skills in English.
Power Distributor and Dispatcher Education and Qualifications
- A high school diploma is the minimum requirement but an associate or bachelor’s degree in the sciences preferably electrical and chemical sciences is preferred
- Must be certified by the North American Energy Reliability Corporation (NERC) if the position covers a wide metropolitan or state grid, otherwise, this is just an advantage
- 2-3 years experience in power plant work in an advantage
