Shipper Job Profile and Description
A shipper makes sure that there is prompt and accurate shipment of goods and he also checks if the incoming packages have the necessary load or if they have been damaged in any way. According to the company or client needs, he prepares items for shipment, for which he must have detailed knowledge of proper shipping techniques and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- A shipper must prepare all shipping documents, which includes bills of lading and manifests
- While doing so, he must follow the company policies and generally accepted procedures
- He may have to assist in processing sales order entries, arrange documentation
- He determines what would be the best, shortest and most cost-effective route of shipment according to the expenses, estimated delivery time and destination
- The shipping and receiving clerk has to coordinate and correspond with couriers, and discuss all logistical operations, including shipment set-ups, delivery instructions and estimated delivery expectations
- He also needs to maintain proper levels of stock. This includes courier-specific shipping materials, postage, packing tape, envelopes and other supplies like bubble wrap for delicate items
- He must also record shipping costs and regularly update them to his supervisor in order to maintain proper amounts of postage
Skills and Specifications
- A shipper must be organised and must be able to coordinate with different departments, sometimes in different cities
- He must have knowledge of shipping techniques and procedures to ensure speedy and cost-effective deliveries
- He must be able to work under pressure and sometimes for long hours and odd shifts
Education and Qualifications
There are no professional degrees available in this field although one may go for some private courses. Some candidates also prefer to do an MBA and or a bachelor’s degree in commerce with specialisation in accounts and book-keeping.
