Trained as a civil engineer, the Traffic Engineer is generally a Federal technocrat who acts as an expert troubleshooter of problematic road traffic conditions in the metropolis and designs or identifies and implements doable interim solutions while recommending long term solutions to the city government. The work requires knowledge of social, cultural and technological factors that may trigger road congestion. From a city planning perspective, the Traffic Engineer focuses on research and the construction of highway and road infrastructures that promote efficient traffic flow.
Traffic Engineer Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop the field traffic research methodology and statistical data gathering techniques and tools for any road traffic research.
- Conduct research for safe and efficient traffic flow and use analyses data to construct the correct road geometry to ease known bottlenecks and implement the proper road markings, signage’s, traffic lights, pedestrian management and intelligent monitoring systems.
- Provide technical supervision regarding traffic control devices to other traffic technicians and laborers.
- Prepare budgets for any proposed long-term traffic solutions.
- Design traffic simulation programs and feed data related to traffic flow, accident rate data, and proposed changes to develop most efficient methods to ease traffic flow.
- Design, plan and improve traffic control systems and components to accommodate projected traffic growth in the medium term
- Approve work orders for repair, maintenance, adjustments and improvements in traffic control systems.
Traffic Engineer Skills and Specifications
- Must have strong analytical and computation skills to handle large mathematical and statistical data for analyzing road traffic conditions
- Must have strong computer literacy and ability to design traffic simulation systems.
- Excellent comprehension and communication skills
- Has strong understanding of road safety laws
Traffic Engineer Education and Qualifications
- A BS degree in civil engineering with board licensure is basic.
- 2-3 year experience in a related work is an advantage.
