A transportation manager is in charge of planning, directing, and coordinating all the activities related to transportation operations within an organization or company. He directs activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking transportation vehicles, such as aircraft and railroad cars. He also has to direct the procurement processes, including equipment research and testing, vendor contracts, and requisitions approval.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A transportation manager serves as a contact point for all workers within a particular area
  • He investigates, verifies and resolves customer or shipper complaints
  • He is also in charge of implementing schedule and policy changes
  • He has to work with other managers and staff members in order to make and implement policies, processes and objectives
  • He also has to monitor operations in order to ensure that staff members comply with the company rules, safety procedures and government regulations
  • Another important responsibility is to monitor spending to make sure that expenses are consistent with the approved budgets
  • He must also direct and coordinate activities of the operations department in order to obtain the use of equipment, facilities and human resources
  • He has to supervise the staff who perform repairs and maintain equipment, vehicles, and facilities

Skills and Specifications

  • He must have good organisational and time management skills
  • He should be able to coordinate work with the other departments
  • He should be capable of critical thinking and use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
  • Communications skills are also required to negotiate with suppliers
  • He should be good with numbers and be able to analyse the relative costs and benefits of potential actions

Education and Qualifications

There aren’t any specific courses for this line but a degree or diploma in management or bachelors in commerce will be helpful in this field.
