Veterinary Technologists conduct medical tests in a pharmaceutical or laboratory research environment with the objective of harnessing pharmacological products in the treatment and diagnosis of animal disorders. They prepare vaccines and serums for the prevention of animal diseases.
Veterinary Technologists/Technicians Duties and Responsibilities
- Observe, monitor and document the behavior and condition of quarantined animals suspected of harboring pathological microbes.
- Prepare infected tissue samples, extract blood samples, label specimens and conduct laboratory tests to observe, record and understand their reaction to various pharmacological substances to finalize the right drug formulation for treatment of these infections.
- Prepare and administer vaccines, medications, serums, and treatments, as may be prescribed by veterinarians.
- Clean and sterilize tools and instruments in the laboratory to maintain standards for hygiene, sanitation and environmental protection.
- Maintain controlled drug inventory using manual or automated inventory management systems.
- Administer anesthesia to animals under the supervision of a veterinarian, and monitor responses to anesthetics throughout the surgical process and adjust follow-on dosages as required.
- Monitor animals recovering from surgery.
- Administer emergency first aid and resuscitation or other life saving procedures

- Must have an analytical and observation skills to identify unique biochemical reaction to specific drug formulation
- Must have a good foundation in statistical laboratory testing methodologies
- Must be willing to work long hours even under extreme work pressures
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to organize, analyze and interpret data into significant information
Education and Qualifications
- An associate degree in veterinary, chemical or biological sciences or equivalent courses is basic
- 3-5 years of experience in laboratory or research work in a university or hospital is an advantage
