Biomedical engineers apply their knowledge of engineering and the various principles and technology to the healthcare sector. These may include researching, designing or they may help develop medical products like robotic surgical instruments or other artificial aids which help the medical sector. They help design and modify equipment for clients with special needs in a rehabilitation centres or help in managing clinical equipment in hospitals, medical equipment manufacturers and various research institutes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A biomedical engineer must apply the latest software programs and mathematical models to design, develop and test new materials and equipment
  • He may be involved in programming electronics and making and testing prototypes
  • He has to anticipate problems and solve them and ultimately create a successful design
  • He must work with technicians and manufacturers to make sure the product is feasible in terms of design and economic viability
  • He has to conduct extensive research to solve clinical problems using various means to collate the necessary information, including questionnaires, interviews and group conferences
  • He must work closely with doctors and therapists as well as patients
  • He must discuss the issues with manufacturing, quality and marketing departments
  • He has to arrange for clinical trials of medical products
  • He has to file reports, attend conferences and exhibitions to present the latest designs to technical and non-technical audiences
  • He is responsible for training technical or clinical staff
  • He must be up to date with new developments and investigate safety-related incidents
