A classroom assistant as the name suggests helps the teacher in and around the classroom. An assistant may either provide non-instructional or instructional help. Non–instructional help includes issuing textbooks, pens and reading materials to the students. On the other hand, instructional help involves for instance demonstrating such skills as handicrafts or dancing. Classroom assistants work under the direction and management of experienced school administrators and the class teachers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Welcoming pupils into class.
- Helping the students sign in.
- Helping the class teacher prepare for lessons.
- Registering all walk-in students
- Handing-out the learning materials.
- Helping the class teacher monitor the progress of the pupils.
- Helping the class teacher prepare teaching aids.
- Assisting teachers distribute tests and assignments.
- Labeling teaching materials.
- Attending to the needs of the pupils.
- Helping teachers prepare the progress reports of the students.
- Helping the teachers maintain the records of the students.
- Assisting teachers in recording student attendance.
- Organizing games and other extra curricular activities
- Supervising pupils while in the cafeteria or during field trips.
- Preparing graphs, charts and other teaching aids.
- Posting work by the students on the bulletin boards.
- Assisting in the implementation of school discipline programs.
- Providing guidance and counseling sessions.
- Demonstrating such skills as craft making, painting and dancing.
- Setting up, operating and maintaining such audio-visual equipment as projectors, tape recorders and televisions.
- Helping teachers in grading tests and exams.
- Collecting payments for class trips.
